The crystalline, slightly white to yellowish wax with a high melting point contains high proportions of wax esters. They are essentially C26 - C32 fatty alcohols esterified with C16 - C24 fatty acids. Sunflower wax is free of glycerol esters or other polyalcohol esters. Sunflower wax is a vegan alternative to beeswax as a strong gelling agent and viscosity regulator, and economically an alternative to jojoba and candelilla wax.
The wax forms a solid crystalline network in oily formulations, which contributes to the texture and viscosity of the formulation. Since sunflower wax does not contain any components that melt below 55 °C, it provides very good thermal stability. It therefore contributes very well to stability, hardness, and texture, e.g. in lip balms, and thanks to its excellent oil-binding capacity it is particularly suitable for the production of oleogels. The wax can be emulsified very well and forms a protective, non-greasy film on the skin, thus providing a pleasant skin feeling. The sunflower wax does not form any disturbing crystals in W/O preparations and O/W preparations are additionally stabilized. It is therefore recommended not only for grease pencils but also for creams, lotions, sunscreen formulations, and hair care products.
