The food emulsifier sodium stearoyl lactylate is used in cosmetics as a versatile additive. It is an emulsifier that improves skin feel and is suitable as a mild (co)surfactant. Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate is suitable for creams, lotions, and baby products. In shampoo formulations, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate stabilizes the foam and has a conditioning effect. However, anionic Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate is not compatible with cationic compounds, e.g. cationic conditioners.
The beige powder is oil soluble and is melted in the oil phase. Since Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate alone hardly gives consistency to the emulsion, the use of stabilizing co-emulsifiers becomes necessary. The use of 1-3% Lanette O and /or Glyceryl Stearate is recommended here.
