The natural template of natural-identical phenethyl alcohol is a component of a large number of natural essential oils (rose, geranium, hyacinth). It therefore stands to reason that phenethyl alcohol is an important fragrance component for perfumery to create floral or rose-like scents.

However, cosmetic formulations benefit from phenethyl alcohol not only because of its ability to mask unwanted odors from other raw materials but more importantly because of its excellent, well-documented antimicrobial activity. Phenethyl alcohol is resistant to alkalis. Its antimicrobial activity is pH-independent. The clear, colorless liquid is easy to use and suitable for rinse-off products, O/W and W/O emulsions. Its solubility in water is 2%. It is therefore also suitable for the preservation of water-based products such as tonics, hydrolates, or plant extracts.

Thanks to its amphoteric structure, phenethyl alcohol is also helpful in solubilizing essential oils or other ingredients that are poorly soluble.

Phenethyl alcohol is biodegradable.
