The water-soluble potassium sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid. In nature, sorbic acid and its salt are found in the unripe fruits of mountain ash (rowan).

When dissolved in water - at a pH value below 5.5 - the sorbic acid, which has a preservative effect, is formed from the potassium sorbate. It very effectively inhibits the growth of yeasts and molds but has little effect against bacteria. Potassium sorbate should therefore be combined with ethanol (ethyl alcohol) or Dermosoft GMCY. Please remember that potassium sorbate loses its effect above a pH value of 7. Therefore, pay attention to the pH value of your formulation and, if necessary, adjust it to the optimal range (pH 4.0 - 5.5) with a little acid. According to European cosmetic regulations, a maximum of 0.6% of free acid may be contained in commercial cosmetic products, which corresponds to 0.8% potassium sorbate. Usually, however, significantly less is already well effective.
