Sorbit, also known as sorbitol, is a plant-based, hexahydric sugar alcohol. This white, odorless powder is highly water-soluble and heat-stable.
 
As a humectant, sorbit is an alternative to glycerin. Although it is not as hygroscopic—and therefore does not bind moisture as well—as glycerin, it is not as “sticky” at higher concentrations.
 
Like glycerin, sorbitol is very gentle on the skin and reduces the degreasing effect of surfactant formulations (shampoos, shower gels).
