The extract from the root of the licorice plant, the medicinal plant of the year 2012, has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect and to combat hyperpigmentation (e.g. "age spots"). While the active ingredient glycyrrhizic acid (or its potassium, calcium, and ammonium salts) inhibits the enzymatic breakdown of the body's cortisol and thus prolongs its anti-inflammatory effect, the flavonoid glabridin intervenes in melanin production by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase. The skin also benefits from its antibacterial and antioxidant properties. The extract is recommended for calming inflammatory or irritated skin conditions, supports wound healing, and relieves itching. Its use in so-called "whitening products" is also interesting.
