Magnolia Extract 98 is composed of 49% each of the pharmacologically active components magnolol and honokiol and is obtained gently by CO2 extraction from the bark of the tree. Magnolia extract is an important remedy from traditional Chinese medicine thanks to its strong antimicrobial, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. From a dermatological point of view, this extract is very interesting because it is very efficient against acne-causing germs without irritating the skin. Moreover, due to its high antioxidant activity - many times higher than that of alpha-tocopherol - Magnolia Extract 98 can neutralize the formation of oxidation products that can be caused, for example, by UV irradiation, thus preventing skin damage, which in turn accelerates skin ageing.
 
These remarkable properties can also be used to "stabilize" formulations. In fats and oils, it helps as a booster - similar to vitamin C palmitate - to extend the effect of mixed tocopherols (e.g. vitamin E, vegetable) and thus the shelf life of the fat/oil.
Magnolia extract shows a strong effect against bacteria, yeasts and fungi already in low application concentrations and independent of pH. The extract is fat and alcohol-soluble and acts synergistically in combination with diols (e.g. Pentylene Glycol Green) and Glyceryl Caprylate (Dermosoft GMCY). This multifunctional active ingredient is available as a beige powder and is suitable for natural cosmetics.
