Magnolia Extract 98 consists of 49% each of the pharmacologically active components magnolol and honokiol and is gently extracted from the tree bark using CO2 extraction. Thanks to its powerful antimicrobial, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects, magnolia extract is an important remedy in traditional Chinese medicine. From a dermatological perspective, this extract is particularly noteworthy because it is highly effective against acne-causing bacteria without irritating the skin. In addition, due to its high antioxidant activity—many times greater than that of alpha-tocopherol—Magnolia Extract 98 is able to neutralize the formation of oxidative byproducts that can arise, for example, from UV exposure, thereby preventing skin damage that in turn accelerates skin aging.
 
These remarkable properties can also be harnessed to “stabilize” formulations. In fats and oils, it acts as a booster—similar to vitamin C palmitate—to enhance the effectiveness of mixed tocopherols (e.g., vitamin E, plant-based) and thereby extend the shelf life of the fat or oil.
